From Madam Sok Leang – the Manager of O’Russey Kandal community at the natural area in Stung Treng :
“I have lived in this village my whole life; I was born here 56 years ago. As part of my life and work I used to be an education practitioner in a health centre, it was not easy to educate people in the local rural area, but I did it as well as I could. When the community started work on this site, I was elected by the local O’Russey Kandal commune, as Manager of O’Russey Kandal Community. There were four things that I was interested in
- people have a safe place to visit.
- protect the forest,
- create jobs for people
The last thing is that part of profit from ticket sales helps the conservation and development of the forest and community.
There is less rubbish in the surrounding Orcharlane waterfall (Orchard Nature Resort) O’Russey Kandal Community than other places in Stung Treng, as the local Community work together to make sure to keep the area clean and safe. However, the biggest impact the project has is on employment. Money from ticket sales helps the community work on cleaning the area, and help with the conservation of the local forest and stream. By visiting O’Russey Kandal Community you can also choose to support nature in our area. There are not many people who visit this place, but it is the perfect excursion from Stung Treng, so please tell people about our project, so they come to visit.”
O’Russey Kandal Community allows visitors to explore the wild and tranquil Cambodian forest. When you enter the forest, the first thing you notice is the smell. The damp earth combined with old fallen leaves. The air in the forest smells good – like damp moss, rain, wet tree trunks and flowers. This projects goals are: · Protect and conserve the local forest and wildlife and promote Eco-tourism · Increase opportunities for local O’Russey Kandal people through sustainable tourism · Protect the natural forest and environment of the stream.
