The 2 days and nights in Koh Pdao homestay involves travel by boat to Roungdeav island across the Mekong river from Sambour. You will stay with a local family and explore the island by foot or bicycle. Rice fields, coconut trees, traditional Khmer villages and rivers make up this beautiful island. The Koh Pdao Homestay is a perfect base to explore the Mekong river by boat and your chance to see the irrawaddy dolphin.

You will stay in a traditional house with a local family. Two villages on the 45km long island host guests. Delicious home cooked Khmer meals are included. Accommodation includes bedding, mosquito net, electricity and a traditional squat-style toilet. The Koh Pdao rural island homestay offers an immersion into village life, in a truly beautiful part of Cambodia.

Itinerary

Day 1:

  • Most guests will travel from Phnom Penh via Kratie town or from Siem Reap via Steung Treng, arriving early to late afternoon.
  • Once you have arrived, you will potentially have time to relax or walk around the local area during daylight.
  • From 5:30 to 6:00 pm, you can take a boat to see the Irrawaddy dolphins. The best time to see them is either in the early morning or the late afternoon. You can also go out in the boat the following morning.
  • For dinner, you will enjoy a delicious traditional Khmer style meal with your homestay family.
  • You will have a private room inside the family house with a traditional bathroom, shared with the family.

Day 2:

  • Get up early or just relax in bed. There is no fixed time for breakfast. Your host will make you breakfast whenever you are ready.
  • After breakfast you can use the free bicycles, or explore the island on foot. You can watch daily life in the villages and meet other families or just enjoy the beautiful landscape. On your way buy a fresh coconut and rest for a moment to soak up the silence and peacefulness.
  • 12:00 noon: Lunch with the community
  • 2:00 pm: Boat trip to sandy beach. The boat driver will take you to one of the island’s most stunning beaches, where you can relax, sunbath and enjoy the afternoon. Whenever you are ready, the boat driver will take you back.
  • 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm: Dinner with your homestay family

Day 3:

  • Breakfast at your homestay
  • Check-out at time of your choice

Getting there

Koh Pdao Homestay can be reached by boat from Sambour (40 kms north of Kratie). Boats are arranged in advance and dock at the shore across from the 100 Pillar Pagoda.

Getting to Sambour
Sambour is 40 kms north of Kratie town along National Road 6 and 7. From Kratie, a tuk-tuk takes 1 hour and costs $20 (carries up to three people).

Getting to the Koh Pdao Homestay
From Sambour, Koh Pdao Homestay on the island of Rougdeav is a 30-minute boat ride. Boats cost $12 to $16 return (depending on how many are in your group). The boat takes you directly to your homestay.

Getting to Kratie:
From Phnom Penh, there are regular bus services to Kratie Province taking between 5 to 7 hours. Times vary, so check with your guesthouse for schedules or visit bookmebus.com to book your journey online.

From Siem Reap to Kratie, buses depart in the morning and take 7 to 8 hours.

Departure:
From Sambour, the easiest way is via Kratie town as most buses depart from there. Go to the the front of the market, a 5 minutes walk away from the 100 Pillar Pagoda. Here you can arrange a tuk-tuk, a motodop or hop on a local bus. If unsure, ask at the restaurant closest to the boat dock as they speak some English.
