BY CAR
Hiring a car for self-driving is very difficult and almost impossible in Cambodia as international driving licences are not recognised here, and you can only drive if you have Cambodian driving licence. The easier option is to hire a taxi – see section below.
BY PLANE
In Cambodia, you will find two international airports, Phnom Penh International Airport and Siem Reap International Airport.
Cambodian Angkor Air is the national airline and operates domestic flights within the country, with services from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. You can travel to Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon and Bangkok from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh.Thai Airways also offer many options for connections with these destinations.
Many tourist also choose to fly between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. It is a short 45 min – 1 hour flight. There are several regional carriers offering good deals if you buy ahead. Getting around Cambodia is getting faster and cheaper for many tourists.
GETTING AROUND CAMBODIA FAST BY TAXI/ SHARED TAXI
With the improvement of the national road network, sharing a taxi is one of the possibilities for travelling, if you are between 2-4 people. These taxis are more comfortable than mini-vans, because you can buy specific seats. As with every kind of private transportation, you have to bargain the price with the driver, try to be strong. Great place to start is a local Facebook group “taxi share Cambodia”, where you will find the approximate prices for the distance between cities and there is also a noticeboard for taxi share is you are travelling alone a looking for other to share the costs.
BY TRAIN
In the last few years, the Cambodia’s rail system started its re-birth with a limited passenger services resuming in 2016 via the Royal Railways. Currently, there is only a service between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville via Kampot, with departures on weekend mornings. The journey is long but scenic, so definitely worthwhile if you are not in hurry. You can find more information about the train time table and but tickets at the Phnom Penh train station.
BY BOAT
It is a very popular method of transportation along the Tonlé Sap, Bassac and Mekong rivers. In the north of Cambodia, the Mekong is easily accessible up until Kratie. Although, there is no regular service for passengers on this section of the river.
Boats also go between Siem Reap and Battamabang, you will cross superb landscape on this trip. However, be aware that it could take most of the day.
The Tonlé Sap Lake is navigable with small boats from March to July and available all year round via other ships.
